If you haven't spent the past couple of months hibernating, you may have realised that it's bloomin cold outside. It's the season of cosy coats and snuggly loungewear, and I have you covered with the best fabrics and patterns for the job. Stick with me and you'll be swanning through winter in comfort and style.
Starting with fabrics - don't get me wrong, I miss all the pretty floral viscose and swishy fabrics of the summer. However, that doesn't mean winter fabrics have to be boring. You can find a range of different warm and cosy fabrics in a huge variety of colours and prints. Fabrics like:
Sweatshirting - This fabric is usually made from polyester or cotton, or sometimes a blend of both. It usually features some elastance content to give it good stretch and recovery. Sweatshirting has a super soft fluffy wrong side and a smooth right side, which can sometimes have a slight sheen. It is perfect for hoodies, jumpers and Joggers.
French Terry - This soft knit fabric features loops on the inside and a smooth outer surface. It has a warm feel and is largely used for loungewear and jumpers. It is typically heavier than a t-shirt weight fabric, but lighter than a sweatshirting knit, making it an excellent middle ground for those who want to be warm and comfortable but not too hot.
Fleece - Typically made from polyester fibres, this snuggly warm fabric is the perfect choice for warm jumpers or lining jackets. It traps in pockets of air to hold in the warmth, making it an excellent choice for your winter wardrobe.
Wool - A winter staple going back centuries. Mostly associated with sheep's coats, but it can also come from alpacas, rabbits and even camels. It can be manufactured using a range of techniques to create different weights, textures and styles. It is the perfect fabric to make cosy jumpers and warm coats.
Pre-quilted fabrics - Who doesn't dream of the perfect Quilted jacket or coat? I know I do, however, the act of sewing a million lines on multiple layers of fabric can make that dream seem a bit nightmarish. Well, lucky you because there are fabrics available that have already done the hard work for you. You can buy a range of pre-quilted fabrics in different colours, prints and thicknesses which will still look amazing, but will save you a lot of precious time. These fabrics feature a layer of wadding sandwiched between two layers of fabric, these are usually cotton, but can also be linen, gauze or polyester.
Coating Fabrics - Want a nice warm coat but maybe you can't afford the woollen price tag, or maybe you would rather seek more vegan friendly options. Luckily there is a vast range of coating Fabrics available that do not feature wool. I personally have a beautiful range of cotton coating Fabrics in my stash, you can also get polyester coats that look and feel amazing. There are so many options out there you really are spoiled for choice.
Base Layer fabrics - Ok, so not technically winter fabrics, but who doesn't love a base layer. When you're thinking of fabric for base layers, like leggings or long sleeve tops, or even long John's (yes I do own a pair), you want to seek out fabric that features mainly natural fibres, such as cotton or bamboo. These will trap in pockets of warm air whilst also allowing the fabric to breathe so it won't make you all sweaty and uncomfortable.
Ok, so that's fabrics done, let's move onto patterns that will keep all your most precious areas snug as a bug in a rug.
